So the draw is over and our job as volunteers is too... Tonight we had a meeting, got our volunteer certificates and were thanked by the Euro 2012 Poland tournament director Mr Adam Olkowicz and a UEFA official...

great yesterday!

THE INTRODUCTION
Yes, to begin with and to have it put plain from the very beginning: I am disappointed. Not with the performance, it was YES after all but with the setlist. I'll come to that in a moment. First about the performance and the venue.
THE VENUE
Spodek, meaning in Polish Saucer, is indeed a saucer-shaped multi-use hall. Yes played there twice before, during the 1998 Open Your Eyes tour and in 2001 for the YesSymphonic tour, both sold out with the venue holding around 7000 people. This time it was a major disappoitment. A much more intimate venue could have been chosen as this time there were circa 2000 people and the organisers estimate was not more than 3000. The seats in the higher circle and on the sides of the stage weren'teven on sale. There are a couple of venues in the south of Poland that would fit this particular concert better.
THE PERFORMERS
One by one, from the weakest point to the man of the day.
ALAN WHITE
For me the weakest point of the performance, but I might have this impression because I've seen Alan in 2003 and 2004 when he was very dynamic. Yesternight he was quite static, even the drum solo wasn't as great as it used to be. I'm sorry to say that, but it seems Alan got a lot more older than the other guys (in terms of playing, of course) during these 5 years. He is still very devoted to what he's doing but it's not
OLIVER WAKEMAN
He seemed to be even less into the show than his father used to be. I didn't like his sound, to metallic and artificial for me, but he did a decent job on the keys. He looks like Rick used to look in the 1970's. Just a younger copy.
CHRIS SQUIRE
A great and energetic performance by Chris. But. There is one but unfortunately. It seems it was Chris who was the cause of my setlist disappointment, at least the major one. At the end of the show, after Roundabout, during the final bows, Chris had problems standing and actually had to hold to Oliver. When I went out and saw an ambulance standing outside the door with the medical team ready, holding a stretcher, I expected the worse but thankfully it seems Chris was just a bit drunk and it wasn't a medical emergency. As for his playing: amazing, powerful bass performance. As usually. I was sitting in front of a bass speaker so when Chris used his bass pedals the world around me was rumbling. He proved also that he can sing! All in all a very good performance by Chris
BENOIT DAVID
He looks like Jon, he sings like Jon, he plays the guitar like Jon but he isn't Jon. He was energetic and tried reading Polish. He did it quite well actually and his announcement "Następna piosenka nazywa się Onward" which means "The next song is called Onward" was greeted with cheering. Benoit was very lively dancing all the time, from time to time jumping on the speakers that were standing in front of the stage. He has a great voice and I can't actually wait for the new album with him on vocals. It would be good if he could perform something that was written for him. He forgot the lyrics once or twice but this wasn't very distracting. The problem is that Benoit doesn't have such a good contact with the audience as Jon had. But I like him and can accept as the lead singer for YES from now on.
STEVE HOWE
The man of the day. This man is reliving his youth! He was so energetic and animated. Wonderous solos, great contact with the audience. Steve was in a very playful mood. He often came to the front of the stage doing tricks. No playing with his teeth this time but I wouldn't expect to see Steve grinning on stage! This man rocks. And I mean it. Most of today's rock guitarist should learn from Steve's yesternight performance how to move on stage and how to play live. And would you expect to see Steve without a guitar? Well I didn't. It's as much an extraordinary view as a funny one. Steve didn't actually know what to do with his hands so he started playing a conductor! He was the man of the day for sure and certainly made the show fabulous despite the setlist disappointment.
THE PERFORMANCE
In total it was a very good show, very energetic. You could see the guys still want to perform. The main problem was the concert was about half an hour shorter than the shows during the first leg of the American tour. It's a pity since a 20 minute break in a middle of a longer show would do the guys more good than rushing through a 2 hour 10 minute show from the beginning to the end without breaks.
THE SETLIST (attention SPOILERS!)
It was pretty much the same as the night before in Olomounec, Czech Republic:
Firebird Suite
Siberian Khatru
I've Seen All Good People
Tempus Fugit
Onward
Astral Traveller (incl. Drum Solo)
And You And I
Yours Is No Disgrace
Steve Howe Solo (Mood For A Day/In The Course Of The Day)
Owner Of A Lonely Heart
Machine Messiah
South Side Of The Sky
Heart Of The Sunrise

Roundabout (encore)
First of all there was no Close To The Edge and Parallels. I hoped for at least CTTE since the guys played it during the first leg of the American tour. But on the other hand I could've expected that. The biggest disappointment is that they played only one encore. It might be because of Chris being really tired (or slightly merry) or because of the awful idea to put seats in the floor section. You shouldn't sit during a rock concert. The highlights of the show? Should I put the setlist here again? But certainly Yours Is No Disgrace, both songs from Drama, Owner Of A Lonely Heart and actually any song containing the slightest sight of Steve's solo. Personally, I'd prefer they'd drop I've Seen All Good People and play Parallels or something else instead and that they'd open their shows with Yours Is No Disgrace but it was great this way too.
THE RECEPTION
It was warmer in 2003 and 2004. As I said the venue was to big for this year's tour. Plus the seats in the floor section. But finally everyone was standing during Roundabout but not much standing ovation for the band. I am slightly disappointed with the Polish audience which is usually a lot more grateful. Still the new members were received very good and when Benoit started speaking, or actually reading, Polish he was cheered wildly.
THE CONCLUSION
We want more! I hope the album will be out as soon as possible and they start the promotional tour in Europe this time. And of course I hope they won't miss Poland during that tor either but maybe this time Warsaw, or Poznań or at least Wrocław? There are a lot better venues for a audience of two to three thousand. And all in all, despite all the disappointment I had in Katowice IT WAS YES AFTER ALL!
