How and about: Euro 2012 Qualifying Draw: Day 5: Imagine all the people

So the draw is over and our job as volunteers is too... Tonight we had a meeting, got our volunteer certificates and were thanked by the Euro 2012 Poland tournament director Mr Adam Olkowicz and a UEFA official...

Today was the day for us to have fun, exchange e-mails and phone numbers and become a group... I'm sure most, if not all, of us had a great time while working during for the Qualifying Draw and most will want to come back for the tournament... And for now it's all over and back to everyday duties... These 5 days were simply amazing in itself... I met lots of fantastic people, I had the pleasure to help celebrities, I gained tons of new experience... I think I said that before: it was fabulous, to many emotions are still in me to describe it... So much fun... It was a pleasure going home dead tired after 14 hours (my choice!) at the airport on Saturday, it was a pleasure helping the UEFA staff to dismantle the set scene after the draw on Sunday, it was more than a pleasure to gather with everyone on Monday, have a drink and have fun afterwards... see you again...

How and about: Euro 2012 Qualifying Draw: Day 4: The Draw Day

What a day! What a week rather! Well 4 days! Lot's of fun, lot's of work and a great time! Today was the day of the draw and this time I was not at the airport but in the Palace of Culture and Science, where the draw took place. Not in the Congress Hall, but in the cloakroom... what can be interesting in standing in the cloakroom for 6 hours? Well... If you hang the coat of Magnus Allbaeck, David Taylor or Michel Platini it's awesome... I didn't hang exactly their coats, but had seen them or stand by them... And this was enough to consider this day great... And hearing thank you, merci or spasiba (rus: Спасиьа) was a enough of a gratification for the duties in the last four days! Believe me, you don't need photos or autographs from the celebrities! If you really get hooked the sole appreciation, a nod, a simple thank you, is enough to make you feel you're important! It was fantastic in the last 4 days and now when it is over, I feel I want more... So the Euro 2012 and the London Olympics are a must...

How and about: Euro 2012 Qualifying Draw: Day 3 Starstruck

Well, what to write after a day of seeing and meeting celebrities? Let's leave the explanation to the fact that I stayed 14 hours when having a 6 hour shift! Not much happening for the first hour or two, but when we had a large group arriving from Ukraine, a flight from Moscow also landed... with Guus Hiddink, who I had the pleasure to lead to the Welcome Desk. Not much chance to chat with him, but he didn't complain which I find as a good sign. The line-up for today was astonishing, and I actually got a look on almost everyone. And the guest arriving today were, among many others: John Toschack, Ottmar Hitzfeld, Fabio Capello, Morten Olsen, Magnus Allbaeck, Joachim Loew, Oliver Bierhoff, Vicente Del Bosque, Bert Van Marwijk, Otto Rehhagel, Berti Vogts (with who I had a pleasure to exchange a word or two), Fernando Hierro, Dejan Savicevic and Gerard Houllier. The last to guests to arrive were Giovanni Trapattoni, with who we had an opporunity to chat a little longer and shake hands. Just a minute after Mr Trapattoni left Dick Advocaat arrived and we also had a short chat with him but since he was in haste we had to proceed fast to the car.

What can I say? Extraordinary, fabulous, amazing, terrific! It was worth staying at the Airport for 14 hours. A good word and a handshake from Giovanni Trapattoni is enough to recompensate all the wait. And I will repeat it: it would be enough even to help these people get around. Without even seeing them! I still have one day left but I can already say it was an amazing experience and I want to be back for the tournament itself. I already registered for the London 2012 Olympics... I think I might get addicted! Listening to music and watching sports are my favourite activities and when volunteering for events like the Euro 2012 Qualifying Draw and the 2012 London Olympics on the sports side and like Roskilde Festival on the music side can enable me to do what I like the most while helping other people!

How and about: Euro 2012 Qualifying Draw: Day 2

How interesting can be a day when the first flight you have to take care of arrives at 4:30PM and the next does not land until 8:30PM? I can say it can be amusing... All right, we did sit and solve crosswords for some time and we did do things we actually shouldn't do, but we had fun! And isn't it the best part? To have fun and help? And to finish it all up Mr Michel Platini arrived this evening to Warsaw... no, I haven't seen him, no he didn't greet anyone and no, it wasn't a disappointment. Though Platini's arrival was the most important moment up to now, tomorrow we'll have over 400 guests arriving and that will be our test...

How and about: Roskilde 2010

A short note about Roskilde 2010... I got hooked into volunteering by the Euro2012 Qualifying Draw and decided to look for other opportunities... Since I started with sports, the next step should be music... And thus I thought of Roskilde Festival... I am now waiting for the application form to appear on the festivals website... And what's further? London Olympics? Euro 2012? Who knows!

How and about: Euro 2012 Qualifying Draw: I volunteer DAY 1

Yes, I am volunteering... A couple of world economies would collapse if not for volunteers... but that's not what I wanted to write about... After day 1 I dare say I got hooked into it, volunteering that is! A great opportunity to get to know new people, gain fantastic experience and have fun at the same time doing something for others... Today was a great day to learn more about each other as we didn't have much work... Crosswords, laughs and jokes were all around... Not much to be said about day 1, maybe I will be able to say something more tomorrow... A general post about volunteering will soon follow...

UK, Warsaw, November 4th 2009

We have here people from all over the world! From the UK, from Sweden, from Japan. Eddie Jobson actually introduced these people by name. The event that takes place in Poland at the moment is historical. Eddie Jobson is joined by Tony Levin, Marco Minnemann, Greg Howe and, for the first time in thirty years, by John Wetton! The band is called Eddie Jobson's U-Z project but is billed as UK 30th Anniversary. Eddie said it's a one of tour and no more shows are planned. But who knows.Yesterday in Warsaw it was simply amazing. The power that came from the stage was great. The guys played a couple of songs by King Crimson and a couple by UK. One by one the performance:

GREG HOWE
A very good guitarist though after seeing Steve Howe on Friday, I wasn't very impressed. A very good solo spot, but it seemed Greg had some trouble handling some of the UK and Crimson stuff. All in all, a very good performance.

TONY LEVIN
What can I say about the man with a moustache and without hair? He played on his little nightmare, that is the Stick. He is the legendary Tony Levin, as Eddie Jobson introduced him. He didn't have his own solo spot but he played great yesterday. I wish he could have some time for himself. Still, it was a great performance from Tony.

MARCO MINNEMANN
Marco! A great guy! I had the opportunity to talk to Marco after the concert. He is a very kind person, he posed for the photos with us and signed my ticket and my setlist. As for the performance: he almost destroyed his drum set during the introduction, he moved like mad around, he seemed to have a third hand during his solo! 13 minutes of amazing drumming! I have to say he was better than Carl Palmer in April! I underestimated Marco before the show, but now I'm pretty sure he is one of the best drummers in the world!

JOHN WETTON
The guest star for this short tour. First time in thirty years on one stage with Eddie Jobson.
His voice yesterday was very clear and bass playing was so powerful. John was great, he had a
great contact with the audience, I tried to catch some eye contact with him but the stage was to
high. John was great yesterday!

EDDIE JOBSON
Eddie is a very kind person. Thanks to the guys from the his forum I got the opportunity to meet
Eddie after the show. He also posed for photos and kindly signed my ticket and my setlist (I
actually got the setlist from one of the roadies). How did Eddie perform? The man with the invisible violin and with the folding keyboard. Eddie is a great musician, his solo was awesome.
He admitted he made some minor mistakes during the show but I didn't hear any. And it was the first time I actually got to hear the keyboards while being in the front row. Eddie was also
awesome yestarday.

But actually everyone yesterday was great. The mix was great yestarday and I could hear
everyone. The concert was absolutely awesome! I wish I could be in Bydgoszcz today. This was the best concert this year.

The setlist is attached on a photo.

YES, SPODEK, KATOWICE 30.10.2009

Najpierw o występie i Spodku.

SPODEK
Yes wystąpiło w Spodku do tej pory dwukrotnie: w 1998 roku podczas trasy Open Your Eyes i w 2001 podczas trasy YesSymphonic. Oba koncerty były wyprzedane, a każdy oklaskiwało około 7000 widzów.

CHRIS SQUIRE
Wspaniały i energetyczny występ Chrisa.

Mimo wszystko lubię go i mogę spokojnie zaakceptować jako nowego wokalistę.

STEVE HOWE
Gwiazda wieczoru!

SETLISTA
Mniej więcej identyczna z tą w Ołomuńcu w Czechach:
Firebird Suite
Siberian Khatru
I've Seen All Good People
Tempus Fugit
Onward
Astral Traveller (plus solo Alana White'a)
And You And I
Yours Is No Disgrace
Steve Howe Solo (Mood For A Day/In The Course Of The Day)
Owner Of A Lonely Heart
Machine Messiah
South Side Of The Sky
Heart Of The Sunrise
---

Znacznie cieplej przyjęła zespół w 2003 i 2004 roku.

YES, SPODEK, KATOWICE, POLAND 30.10.2009: A night to remember

THE INTRODUCTION

Yes, to begin with and to have it put plain from the very beginning: I am disappointed. Not with the performance, it was YES after all but with the setlist. I'll come to that in a moment. First about the performance and the venue.

THE VENUE

Spodek, meaning in Polish Saucer, is indeed a saucer-shaped multi-use hall. Yes played there twice before, during the 1998 Open Your Eyes tour and in 2001 for the YesSymphonic tour, both sold out with the venue holding around 7000 people. This time it was a major disappoitment. A much more intimate venue could have been chosen as this time there were circa 2000 people and the organisers estimate was not more than 3000. The seats in the higher circle and on the sides of the stage weren'teven on sale. There are a couple of venues in the south of Poland that would fit this particular concert better.

THE PERFORMERS

One by one, from the weakest point to the man of the day.

ALAN WHITE

For me the weakest point of the performance, but I might have this impression because I've seen Alan in 2003 and 2004 when he was very dynamic. Yesternight he was quite static, even the drum solo wasn't as great as it used to be. I'm sorry to say that, but it seems Alan got a lot more older than the other guys (in terms of playing, of course) during these 5 years. He is still very devoted to what he's doing but it's not

OLIVER WAKEMAN

He seemed to be even less into the show than his father used to be. I didn't like his sound, to metallic and artificial for me, but he did a decent job on the keys. He looks like Rick used to look in the 1970's. Just a younger copy.

CHRIS SQUIRE

A great and energetic performance by Chris. But. There is one but unfortunately. It seems it was Chris who was the cause of my setlist disappointment, at least the major one. At the end of the show, after Roundabout, during the final bows, Chris had problems standing and actually had to hold to Oliver. When I went out and saw an ambulance standing outside the door with the medical team ready, holding a stretcher, I expected the worse but thankfully it seems Chris was just a bit drunk and it wasn't a medical emergency. As for his playing: amazing, powerful bass performance. As usually. I was sitting in front of a bass speaker so when Chris used his bass pedals the world around me was rumbling. He proved also that he can sing! All in all a very good performance by Chris

BENOIT DAVID

He looks like Jon, he sings like Jon, he plays the guitar like Jon but he isn't Jon. He was energetic and tried reading Polish. He did it quite well actually and his announcement "Następna piosenka nazywa się Onward" which means "The next song is called Onward" was greeted with cheering. Benoit was very lively dancing all the time, from time to time jumping on the speakers that were standing in front of the stage. He has a great voice and I can't actually wait for the new album with him on vocals. It would be good if he could perform something that was written for him. He forgot the lyrics once or twice but this wasn't very distracting. The problem is that Benoit doesn't have such a good contact with the audience as Jon had. But I like him and can accept as the lead singer for YES from now on.

STEVE HOWE

The man of the day. This man is reliving his youth! He was so energetic and animated. Wonderous solos, great contact with the audience. Steve was in a very playful mood. He often came to the front of the stage doing tricks. No playing with his teeth this time but I wouldn't expect to see Steve grinning on stage! This man rocks. And I mean it. Most of today's rock guitarist should learn from Steve's yesternight performance how to move on stage and how to play live. And would you expect to see Steve without a guitar? Well I didn't. It's as much an extraordinary view as a funny one. Steve didn't actually know what to do with his hands so he started playing a conductor! He was the man of the day for sure and certainly made the show fabulous despite the setlist disappointment.

THE PERFORMANCE

In total it was a very good show, very energetic. You could see the guys still want to perform. The main problem was the concert was about half an hour shorter than the shows during the first leg of the American tour. It's a pity since a 20 minute break in a middle of a longer show would do the guys more good than rushing through a 2 hour 10 minute show from the beginning to the end without breaks.

THE SETLIST (attention SPOILERS!)

It was pretty much the same as the night before in Olomounec, Czech Republic:

Firebird Suite

Siberian Khatru

I've Seen All Good People

Tempus Fugit

Onward

Astral Traveller (incl. Drum Solo)

And You And I

Yours Is No Disgrace

Steve Howe Solo (Mood For A Day/In The Course Of The Day)

Owner Of A Lonely Heart

Machine Messiah

South Side Of The Sky

Heart Of The Sunrise

---

Roundabout (encore)

First of all there was no Close To The Edge and Parallels. I hoped for at least CTTE since the guys played it during the first leg of the American tour. But on the other hand I could've expected that. The biggest disappointment is that they played only one encore. It might be because of Chris being really tired (or slightly merry) or because of the awful idea to put seats in the floor section. You shouldn't sit during a rock concert. The highlights of the show? Should I put the setlist here again? But certainly Yours Is No Disgrace, both songs from Drama, Owner Of A Lonely Heart and actually any song containing the slightest sight of Steve's solo. Personally, I'd prefer they'd drop I've Seen All Good People and play Parallels or something else instead and that they'd open their shows with Yours Is No Disgrace but it was great this way too.

THE RECEPTION

It was warmer in 2003 and 2004. As I said the venue was to big for this year's tour. Plus the seats in the floor section. But finally everyone was standing during Roundabout but not much standing ovation for the band. I am slightly disappointed with the Polish audience which is usually a lot more grateful. Still the new members were received very good and when Benoit started speaking, or actually reading, Polish he was cheered wildly.

THE CONCLUSION

We want more! I hope the album will be out as soon as possible and they start the promotional tour in Europe this time. And of course I hope they won't miss Poland during that tor either but maybe this time Warsaw, or Poznań or at least Wrocław? There are a lot better venues for a audience of two to three thousand. And all in all, despite all the disappointment I had in Katowice IT WAS YES AFTER ALL!

YES countdown

Yes will play in Katowice in 3 days... I can't wait... That's all for today... Review on Saturday... Hopefully...

Wolsung... In English

As I promised, I write a short note about the new Polish RPG Wolsung.
Being the most awaited Polish RPG since 2003, the release on September 30th wasn't a dissapointment. The rulebook I got was in hardcover, well designed, with nice pictures inside. It made a good reading too. Despite some typos.

But what is Wolsung? It's a steampunk RPG. Actualy I'm not going to describe neither the world nor the rules because the authors might want to release it internationaly. But whatever is said, the six year wait had come to an end and we now have Wolsung on our shelves.
